Book of Dead GO Collect Slot Review: RTP, Features and Free Demo

Our score: 8.2/10

Quick verdict: GO Collect is Book of Dead with a second way to win. The expanding-symbol free spins are untouched, and Gold Staters now feed a Hold and Spin Treasure Vault with four fixed jackpots. The max win doubles to 10,000x. If the original felt too empty between bonuses, this is the version to try.

The remake

What is Book of Dead GO Collect?

Book of Dead GO Collect is Play'n GO's remake of its most famous slot, released on for the tenth anniversary of the original. Play'n GO later said it broke the studio's launch records for players, bets and revenue, without publishing the numbers.

The core is the game you know. Rich Wilde, the Pharaoh, Anubis and Horus sit on a 5x3 grid with 10 lines, the golden Tomb is Wild and Scatter, and 3 Tombs start 10 free spins with an expanding symbol. Even the paytable is the same: five Rich Wildes still pay 500x your bet.

What's new happens in the base game. Gold coins called Gold Staters stick to ordinary symbols and fly into a golden bowl on the left. The fuller the bowl, the better your chance of the Treasure Vault, a Hold and Spin bonus with jackpots up to 500x. That gives GO Collect two bonus routes where the original has one.

Paytable

Symbols and paytable

GO Collect keeps the classic paytable. Rich Wilde pays 500x your bet for five on a line, the Pharaoh 200x, and Anubis and Horus 75x each. These four premiums pay for two in a row. A and K top out at 15x and Q, J and 10 at 10x.

The Tomb Scatter is Wild and lands on all reels. As a Wild, it uses the value of the highest-paying symbol it can complete. As a Scatter, it pays 2x, 20x or 200x your bet for 3, 4 or 5 anywhere and starts the free spins.

Features: free spins and the Treasure Vault

Free spins with an expanding symbol

Three or more Tombs award 10 free spins. One symbol is picked at random to expand, exactly like in the original: when it lands on enough reels to win, it fills them and pays on all 10 lines. The reels don't need to touch. OLBG reports that retriggers add 10 spins each, up to 80 spins in total.

The ceiling is the same as the classic game. Rich Wilde as the expanding symbol across all five reels pays 5,000x. With Q, J or 10, a full screen pays 100x. Gold Staters don't appear during the free spins, so this round is pure Book of Dead.

GO Collect and Gold Staters

In the base game, Gold Staters can appear on any symbol except the Tomb. They're collected into the bowl automatically. The rules say the more you collect, the higher the chance of triggering the Treasure Vault. The game doesn't show how the chance grows, and the bowl isn't a guarantee.

The Treasure Vault (Hold and Spin)

The Vault clears the reels and gives you 3 re-spins. Every stater that lands sticks and resets the count to 3. Ordinary staters are worth 1x to 5x your bet. Bonus staters carry the jackpots: Mini 10x, Minor 20x, Major 100x and Grand 500x. When the re-spins run out, everything on the grid is added up and paid.

Treasure Gamble

GO Collect replaces the card gamble with scarabs. After a win you can try to land more Brilliant Staters than Broken Staters to double it, up to 4 times. As with any gamble, the average return equals your stake. It only makes the swings bigger. It isn't offered in every market.

The numbers

RTP, volatility and max win

The top RTP is 96.2%: in theory, $96.20 back for every $100 wagered over millions of spins. OLBG lists four lower settings, 94.2%, 91.2%, 87.2% and 84.2%, which mirror the original. Check the info screen at your casino to see which one you're playing.

Reviewers rate the volatility medium-high, a step below the original. OLBG reports a hit frequency of 23.92%, so roughly one spin in four pays something. That's a third-party figure, not Play'n GO's.

The rules screen says "Win up to 10000x your normal bet". That's $1,000 at $0.10 and $10,000 at $1. The Vault's Grand alone is 500x, so reaching the cap takes a combination of big wins in one round. OLBG puts the odds at less than one in a billion spins.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • The classic free spins are kept exactly as they were
  • Gold Staters give the base game something to watch
  • Four fixed jackpots and a 10,000x ceiling
  • Same paytable, so Book of Dead players feel at home

What we don't

  • The game doesn't show how the bowl affects your Vault chance
  • Lower RTP versions exist, as with the original
  • No staters during the free spins, so the two bonuses never mix

Our verdict: is GO Collect worth playing?

The best way to play Book of Dead today if you want more than one feature.

Play'n GO didn't touch what made the original work, and that's the smart part. The free spins are the same tense, all-or-nothing round. The Treasure Vault fills the long gaps between them with a second, steadier bonus and real jackpots.

Purists who love the bare 2016 game won't miss anything here, but they won't need it either. Everyone else gets a better-rounded slot with double the top prize. Compare it with the original Book of Dead before you choose.
